The main problem with which many of us suffer (as human beings) is that we are rarely happy with what we have and frequently believe that we would be happier if we had this or could do that, or whatever. I think it must be an evolutionarily derived trait, naturally selected with a million years of genetic reinforcement, to help us in our need to survive as a specie. If humans were innately happy, what more would they have to do? Early humans had needs, of course, and were constantly having to figure out how to eat and stay warm. “If only I had a better shelter from the rain I could be happy.” Now, here we are, spoiled little fat things, most of us living a ridiculously easy life compared to an early hominid, and yet we still have the drives that helped these simple people to evade extinction and we have no idea what to do with them. So, one thing we do is long for material wealth and power and prestige. How worthless those goals really are. No happiness guarantee there.
I wonder if early humans were ever able to live in the present, to gaze at a beautiful sunset, relax under tree, draw a picture just for the sake of drawing, swim in a pond just for fun? Was there any time that they weren’t thinking about what they had to do next; wondering how to achieve happiness?
I sincerely hope so. Because if they were able to do it, then we can do it, too.
